Colombian President Álvaro Uribe proposed that members of the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) allegedly deployed in Venezuelan territory to put down their arms and surrender to judicial authorities in Colombia.

In a statement released on Wednesday by local media, Uribe said that the initiative will be carried out by Jaime Bermúdez, the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, as an alternative to the peace plan for Colombia announced by the Venezuelan government, Efe reported.

In the statement, Uribe added that he contacted Bermúdez on Tuesday night to recommend him to "try this formula: if Venezuela has a peace plan, we also have one here (in Colombia)."

"If they (Venezuela) want to help overcome the guerrilla issue, then they must tell the guerrillas deployed in Venezuela to demobilize. Colombian public prosecutors could seek them and bring them here. They will be given all guarantees provided for under Colombia's Justice and Peace Law (reinsertion of paramilitaries and guerrilla members)," Uribe said.
